World Press Photo not allowing multimedia – error.

Ok…I want to know why the World Press Foundation have not yet acknowledged the fact that multimedia is a huge voice in the modern world of photojournalism. Really, I want to know why there is yet again no multimedia category. Error.

I really thought this year would be the first where they allow multimedia entries. I cannot for the life of me understand the omission. I am by no means the only photojournalist now shooting stories explicitly with multimedia in mind. If I want to enter the competition, I have to strip stills from my multimedia set, effectively taking them out of the context upon which they were shot. Error.

As Ben and I teach our students, there is a huge difference between shooting a set/story for a multimedia piece and doing the same for a magazine feature, a huge difference. (If you don’t understand why then you need to come on our training courses).

Maybe it’s a time thing…the judges already have to plough through thousands upon thousands of images, and if they had to give three minutes over to each mm piece then the next competition would be up before judging of the last one stops…but there are ways around such problems…other competitions overcome such obstacles.

It would also be good if people could nominate mm pieces they think worthy of attention..although I suppose that could be open to abuse. Personally I would nominate any of the recent MSF Condition Critical pieces, produced by some geezer called Binjameen Chest-Twerton.

I am not seeing any stills images hitting me like those pieces. No error.

Come on WPP…what’s the deal?
