Camera-less photography..
Written by David WhiteRemember when you used to do photograms in the darkroom, back in the day? Seeing how your hand looked, a pair of scissors, a leaf or two….
No? Bollocks. Well, whatever, you young whipper snapper you. Anyway…such simple approaches can be very effective at making images..
And this little lot take things to a whole new level…I just hope Adam, whose picture we show above, didn’t really stick a baby under an enlarger. I suppose it’s better than digging one up out of the ground for a pic though..
Fascinating podcast and images here…
The exhibition at the V & A until February 20th.

He puts the babies in a pool of water and gets them waving their arms around, with the ilfochrom underneath. So they are massive photograms, but the whole working with children and animals thing definitely applies here. It is an incredibly complex process to get the babies just right. They’re great though, so foetal!
Blimey that’s tricky. If I tried it I’d end up with the babies in a pool of ilfosol, the ilfochrom on the floor
and me waving my arms around.
You gotta take a look at the work of Martha Madigan.
Thanks Jeremy…wow.
