I think it is highly likely that it is, certainly in terms of relevance to the contemporary UK photography community, in terms of genuine passion for the medium and certainly in terms of sheer determination to make it work with no funds. I think a quick look at their exhibitions to date will convincingly blow away the competition for that title.

Nick … I completely agree. Its amazing isn’t it. Maybe its because they have been so humble about the whole thing, but the shows are stellar. There’s a complete lack of pretentiousness about their approach.

That said I think HOST put a lot back.

Maybe you would consider writing a blog post about your thoughts on this?

Jon Levy and Host are certainly excellent and extremely active, they would certainly be the other contenders in my eyes. Again, they receive no public funding as far as I am aware but outperform many who do. I think in overall activity HOST are on top but for the exhibition program of the gallery I would have to say that Third Floor have it.

I’ve said this before with regard to The Photographers Gallery but the more I am involved with photography events in the UK the more I see the same people popping up again and again, the same people judging awards, the same people giving folio reviews at every event etc. There is a community of people in UK photography all on salaries from various Arts Council funded institutions that are actually not doing such a great job at finding and nurturing and promoting new British talent…..their decisions are safe and predictable, never rocking the boat and far too often they just take exhibitions that are curated elsewhere (usually the States). It is in this context that we see people like The Third Floor Gallery come along and what a breath of fresh air it is, they are not part of this salaried mafia, they have the youthful optimism that the Photographers Gallery had in its early days.
