Why White Men Should Refuse To Be On All White Men Panels
Written by duckrabbit‘After watching this happen again and again, something occurred to me: Why don’t the white men who are asked to engage in this nonsense simply stop doing it? The boycott is a protest with a long history of success. If white, male elites started saying, “I will not participate in your panel, event, or article if it is all about white men,” chances are these panels and articles would quickly dry up—or become more diverse.’

I can’t see these panels being created where the selectee is knowingly leaving out women or coloured individuals. Especially when it’s a white guy creating one. To give them the benefit of the doubt, what’s that phrase about a Fish discovering water last? I’ve never even listened to a panel and realised halfway through that coloured people were missing either (I’m also white (but European 😉 so go figure).
I do agree there should be a fairer representation. As a ‘white male’, the only thing I notice in panels are the ratios of men to women. With the women always being outnumbered.
Funny how white men people rarely get the chance to notice they’re the the odd one out …
I do when I’m strutting around the corridors of Harrow Campus.

I’m always amazed that photographers in particular (people, professionals who so highly pride themselves on their innate, and finely honed powers of observation) are aghast to acknowledge that so many photographic panels, workshops, and festivals are so overwhelmingly if not exclusively white.
