After Jugo

Bloodyhell the photogs on the LCC photojournalism Masters are a talented bunch. Seriously. The downside is that my life seems to be being overtaken by requests to look at stuff.

I met Marco Pavan at the wonderful Third Frame conference Paul Lowe organised at LCC.  Talking to him was a real pleasure and it gives me even more pleasure to introduce his epic ‘After Jugo‘ multimedia on duckrabbit which won won the first prize in the Digital Heretics for digital journalism awards at the International Journalism Festival of Perugia, Italy.

Way to go Marco.

After Jugo

Sarajevo, the life of a generation

Sarajevo is the city where East and West meets, a sort of Istanbul of the Balkans. But today, after 15 years after the was ended, in Bosnia and Herzegovina there are still strong ethnic tensions and many economical problems. Since when the Dayton peace agreement was signed, everybody in Europe considered the conflict in the Balkans to be resolved, but in fact the break-up of a country brings changes that last for many years. And today, western medias rarely speak of this and the citizens of the neighbouring countries forgot what happened and do not know how the society is recovering and how individuals are living.

With “After Jugo”, a multimedia documentary reportage about life in Sarajevo, I decided to focus on the young people, those born in the 80s: a generation which is ‘in between’, they remember the war very well but they were too young to fight in it and they will soon become involved in building the future of their country.

“After Jugo” is a website where photographs, video interviews and sound work together to portray the life of a generation. The stories of the people are as important as the images, if not more. With the photographs I tried to give a hint of how is life in Sarajevo today and to contextualize the subjects showing the environment where they live. The interviews, with the sound of the voice, make people real and help to involve the audience in their stories.

“After Jugo” started as major project for the Master in Photojournalism and Documentery Photography that I attended in London during the course of 2009. In April 2010 it won the first prize Digital Heretics for digital journalism at the International Journalism Festival of Perugia, Italy.
