Yasuyoshi Chiba nails it (again)
Written by duckrabbitYasuyoshi is in South Africa shooting The World Cup. He emailed me today to say that one of his photos was a two page centre spread in the Guardian. If anyone saw it, or has a copy please give me a shout. In true Chiba style he hasn’t shot anywhere near a football stadium preferring to hang with the vast majority of people who can’t afford a ticket.
Yasuyoshi doesn’t know which of his photos it was, but there was a good chance it’s this one, which reminds me a lot of the photo of his from the Obama win that we’ve taken as the duckrabbit banner at the top of the page:

Nice to see a World Cup photo that contains no vuvuzelas, ecstatic fans, or juxtapositions of opulence and poverty.
This one is well seen and beautiful, of course. It also captures something of the complexity of the moment in South Africa — joy, pride, and, at the same time, the realization that the World Cup cannot in itself create a just society.
But WC 2010, despite all the nay-sayers, can surely help. Here, the last line of the caption is instructive. This event, in a variety of interesting ways, is bridging divides.
Here it is. Great shot. Big story told in one image.
