Crude Awakening

The devastation caused by the oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico and which is causing great pain to huge numbers of people is chicken feed compared to the suffering that is going to be unleashed on this planet as it hots up.

What’s one of the main driving factors of climate change?

Consumption, made possible by our addiction to oil.

Who is the largest emitter of CO2 (the gas that is helping cause climate change) on the planet?

The USA.

Wake up.

All of us.

  1. I was talking about this with the brainy-half Sojournposse yesterday. So ironic that it happened in the Gulf of Mex. It’s like a metaphor of over-consumption, now spilling out uncontrollably. We have a real bad romance with fossil fuel. It was take, take, take until no one’s getting the love back anymore. I’m being poetic here, but that’s how it looks like to me.

  2. Wake up to what though? Many people are aware that the planet needs a break from consumption of fossil fuels but when we see America using so much, there doesn’t seem to be much point in trying to make the effort. Not to mention the rising industrial activity in China and India. I’m not saying that the UK is exempt… far from it, just pointing out that as one person, it feels like I am fighting a losing battle.

Much of the activity in China and India is to feed consumption in the West.

Once there was a time when some black people didn’t think here was any point fighting for equality, when some women didn’t think there is any point in fighting for the vote. Things shift when enough people get pissed off and make enough noise.

Climate change will be the biggest driver of social inequality, we just can’t afford to ignore it.

  3. I also just found this…

now if this is true then why has this type of plan being put into effect?

  4. “We have a real bad romance with fossil fuel…”

    Yep.

Here’s a link to Jane Fulton Alt’s Crude Awakening website. The photos are definitely worth looking at larger and slower:
