Very well said and thought about, but with one major hurdle: cost
now before the nancy brigade go all “it’s about the art man..” on my arse, the type of technological feats he’s talking about there requires a vast amount of knowledge and experience to do. I think the reason why we have “bad tv” is that the tools currently only really allow a limited number of formats in which you can export your content to.
If you wanted to, you could create a custom HTML5/Flash setup with full interactivity for each image, but that then requires you to know how to code html5/flash and really know how to integrate difference services into your presentation. At the same time, you are wondering how the hell you’ll make a ROI (Return on Investment for the non-business folk) spending weeks learning all this new tech, let alone building the slideshow.
So yes, it’s all very easy to think about cool whizz bang features on paper but the real challenge is doing it in a manner that doesn’t make it a time consuming task.
I’m with Daniel. To me its a bit like DVD extras. I like them but I buy the DVD for the film. I like novels that need to be read from start to finish. Interactivity can be great but it can also be a curse …
i totally agree with both of you – all this stuff certainly isn’t practical to a one-man-band like me, and tbh as a viewer I’m not too arsed about getting all interactive – it seems like a distraction from the main thing, which is the story. I just thought it was eloquently put though – am currently writing an essay for uni on multimedia and it caught my eye. It’s very much the same as Fred Ritchin’s position on where things should go. but neither of them (as far as I know) are currently practitioners…and certainly they aren’t self-funding like most of us
Sounds rather a lot like a webpage to me. Probably on a something like a well written blog. There’s audioboo for the sound, or soundcloud, and the buttons are optional clicks, and not mouseovers or some automatic sound that starts like 80s music on geocities. 😉 Joerg even says ‘should you wish to’. I’m thinking we’re already there, aren’t we? What am I missing?
When I first read it, I said- yeah, how come it aint being done? My second thought, without knowing anything concerning the intricacies and technology that Daniel brought up, was- bet it sure would cost! And hasn’t there already been a backlash against basic Flash presentations?
Personally, I find it quite interesting when there’s some kind of virtual “art piece” that has all kinds of hidden, interactive bells and whistles. But when something’s presenting information, be it photo essay, multimedia piece, or blog (particularly the latter)- simplicity goes a long way. Can’t say it can’t be done- Prison Valley being a prime example on how to do it right.
