Depression and Josh Ritter

Some of you may know that after coming back to the UK from living in Ethiopia duck fell into a depression. I learned that there is no shame in going under.

For me coming out of depression has always been defined by a moment when I feel life flowing back though my veins, an overwhelming sense of wanting to live again. The last time that happened to me was at a Josh Ritter gig in Birmingham.

Tommorow I will start making the journey back to the UK from Kenya. Its been an incredible three weeks. Mindblowing at times. But I’ve never looked forward so much to going home to the place where I am loved, where the lantern is always lit.

So if you’ve got a light, hold it high for me
I need it bad tonight, hold it high for me
‘cause I’m face to face, hold it high for me
in a lonesome place, hold it high for me
With all the hurt that I’ve done, hold it high for me
that can’t be undone, hold it high for me
light and guide me through, hold it high for me
I’ll do the same for you, and hold it high for me

I’ll hold it high for you, cause I know you’ve got
I’ll hold it high for you, your own valley to walk
I’ll hold it high for you, though it’s dark as death
I’ll hold it high for you, and then gets darker yet
I’ll hold it high for you, though your path is blocked
I’ll hold it high for you, through the thieves and rocks
I’ll hold it high for you, keep you safe from harm
I’ll hold it high for you, until you’re back in my arms

Hey, thanks for that Margo. He also kept me going in Ethiopia. I used to play Girl In The War everyday. I think its one of the most poignant songs ever written.

Have a great gig. When he’s on form he’s incredible.

Sorry, but the only thing that truly shakes me from the black dogs jaw is a little ditty that I am sure will be familiar to most…

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you’re chewing on life’s gristle
    Don’t grumble, give a whistle
And this’ll help things turn out for the best…

And…always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the light side of life…

    If life seems jolly rotten
    There’s something you’ve forgotten
And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you’re feeling in the dumps
    Don’t be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle – that’s the thing.

And…always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the light side of life…

    For life is quite absurd
    And death’s the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin – give the audience a grin
Enjoy it – it’s your last chance anyhow.

So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath

    Life’s a piece of shit
    When you look at it
    Life’s a laugh and death’s a joke, it’s true.
    You’ll see it’s all a show
Keep ’em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

And always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the right side of life…
    (Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the bright side of life…
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life…
(I mean – what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing – you’re going back to nothing.
    What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life…
