UK Child Detention Kicked Into Touch

This is a massive victory for the power of campaigning journalism. The despicable detention of children of asylum seekers is to end.

The successful campaign has been headed by freelance journalist Clare Sambrook. One or two photographers and NGOs could learn from the fact that the campaign sought to humanize families seeking asylum, not just present them as victims.

“One thing we’ve managed to do in the campaign is get across that it’s people, real people that the government is doing this to. That’s why it’s hit home. The term asylum seekers lets everybody, even liberal people, forget that they are people.

“What we’ve tried to do is get across that these are children just like yours or mine.”

Completely agree with you on this and a good pat to all the children’s charities who have emphasised so much on children in detention and have run many campaigns to see this happen. Should be a good start in 2011.

Congrats to everyone who have been a part of this effort.
