Do you have to be an egomaniac to get a photograph on the cover of TIME?

Or is that just a consequence?

UPDATE:

Here’s a comment:

I was in Burma photographing Suu Kyi the day she was released and the days after including a portrait session at the NLD office. I like Platon’s photo but having spent lots of time in Rangoon, I can tell you there is no way you can find a car in that city that will reach 90mph or a road that will allow you to drive that fast! Also the secret police outside her NLD office are on scooters not in cars.

Of course you could just take Plankton’s word for it …

Nice photo. Maybe TIME want to suck up to Asian women again after that irritating Jodi Bieber’s cover. What did we tell you about hyper-realistic representation of Asian women in the media? It’s Madam Butterfly, classic.

  2. FANTASTIC story from Platon about Time’s recent cover shot, and great philosophy on portraits and the human spirit: http://bit.ly/hkzSHL

his whole story is factually incorrect, especially to those of us who have spent time inside Burma. Hello, fast cars, jesus wept mate who are you kidding?
Yes you are watched, but that’s only because you don’t exactly fit in.

    then again he is platon.

Ah yes, the “open up” bit. I can write another feminist theory on this, the camera as an extensive of a photog’s penis. I actually like Platon’s work. However I like the mystery of making a portrait. As an observer I love wondering how it’s done, it’s part of the journey of enjoying the image. So we can’t really fault Platon for being a personality (most photogs are!). I would edit Platon’s interview differently and carefully. So all blame back to TIME editors. They are the gatekeepers, they are trained journalists (we hope) and they let this interview out like this.
