Tate Britain makes the effort to bring different audiences to see great Art.
Written by duckrabbitThese people put a night on – a Michael Jackson Off the Wall themed Friday night… poetry, acoustic music, Blacktronica DJ’s and a bar.
and look at the demographics in the audience!!!!!
I have NEVER been to a photojournalism show and been in an audience made up like that. This is in London so next time you go to a show putting up a shanty town… look around you. Have a look at what is being shown on the walls and then who is looking. The Tate show what is possible if the effort is made to engage different audiences. No resting on laurels here – proper diversity with total sincerity without a hint of being patronised by the great and the good.
Loads of people just having a great deal of fun and looking at what was on the wall.
Congratulations to the Tate for putting this on… making a lovely space look like this… I really enjoyed myself and so did everyone else.
I can only speak of London and France so what is New York like?
Sorry for the rubbish iPhone images but I did not really care at the time… after all, I am not a…

IAMNOT … I’m not sure your point about photography and shanty towns is fair. Sure for VISA, but we’re talking the UK where shanty town exhibitions don’t easily spring to mind.
Come on its the New Year, cheer up!
These nights are good, but the tate britain has nothing to do with photography (a few paul grahams on the wall here and there I seem to recall)?
This event is part of the ‘Lates’ series where all the bigger LDN galleries have a rotating late night on Friday each month and generally build something musical, etc. around their evening.
Generally a good night and the kind of things you can turn up to solo and meet people (especially foreign ladies).
Good to see you back here Falling Soldier kicking out ass!
Joking aside we don’t think of photography, or duckrabbit as ghetto, though others might. We draw out inspiration from everywhere.
I think the photography world is SO tight knit and self referential its often frightened to reach outside of itself. IAMNOThas been a superb chronicler of this.
“Generally a good night and the kind of things you can turn up to solo and meet people (especially foreign ladies).”
Falling Soldier, are you Nick Griffin?
Meaning what?
Again duckrabbit the context you provide against my satirical tone is required to balance my thoughts. I assure you duck I am happy!
As an ethnic minority, I cannot tell others how liberated I felt at Late… I was born in London but I think one of the other comments have just made me feel foreign, probably by accident, probably enforcing my perceptions, probably justifying my decision not to try and contribute to photography.
Better than the photographer at the big US agency who told me “I want to see pictures of black kids doing what they do on the streets, robbing little old white women”. Better than calling all “Russians are Inbred”.
I felt comfortable being part of the Tate audience and happy to share that openly as the organisers deserve the credit for making me feel part of their world.
wind your necks in guys, i was talking about cute foreign chicks of which there are many.
i know as i search them out 🙂
