Condition One – a new way of experiencing war?

According to Time, the very talented photographer and filmaker Danfung Dennis is creating a new APP that will shake the viewer from their apathy to war, combining,

“the power of the still image, the narrative of films and the emotional engagement of tactile experiences to create a new language that is so immersive, it will shake viewers out of their numbness to traditional media and provide them a powerful emotional experience. Instead of opening a window to glimpse another world, we are attempting to bring the viewer into that world as an active participant.”

I disagree that there is numbness to traditional media. We’re glued to the box, it’s what’s going on in the rest of the world that we’re numb to. No change there.

Dennis goes on to claim:

“Once viewers enter a video experience, they can move the tablet in any direction and see the corresponding field of view. The traditional two-dimensional, rectangular frame is shattered as viewers step inside the frame and experience the stories as the protagonists.”

Are you gonna break it to Dennis or am I, someone already got there first.

I think this is interesting technology but the issue here though is will be just another gimmick in the presentation or be utilised to facilitate the telling of a story and the conveyance of information. I’m hazarding a guess at which one it’ll be. As for the claims that this will change the way people view war – a real app that would shake the viewer from their apathy to war would be one that blew off the wall of your house and took half your family with it when you tapped the screen.

Some people do not sell their work short, eh.

Yeah, and how many weeks before we tire of it… I’m with Tom- how ’bout an app that when activated, may or may not electrocute you, may or may not blow your arm off into a stump, may or may not kill the person to your right, left, front or back…
