To coincide with Robert Gumpert’s first UK exhibition of his extraordinary photographic archive taken inside San Francisco jails over nearly two decades, Foto8 is delighted to host an evening of discussion and debate with Gumpert and two other leading practitioners in the field.

For two years, Ed Clark photographed intensively inside a geriatric ward for serious offenders in a UK jail, culminating in his work ‘Still Life: Killing Time’ and has since made ‘If the Light Goes Out’ from the world’s most infamous detention centre, Guantanamo Bay.

Erwin James served twenty years of a life sentence for two murders, and, despite entering prison barely literate, he embarked on an Open University course while incarcerated, and eventually began writing a column, A Life Inside, for The Guardian. He was released in 2004, and has continued his writing career ever since.

The panel will aim to cast light on themes of incarceration, freedom, crime and punishment, as well as the role of the arts in rehabilitation and public understanding.
