Should The Photographers’ Gallery And Public Urinal be renamed?
Written by duckrabbitMaybe, according to Sean O’Hagan writing in the Guardian.
The dominance of the narrow thread of conceptualism in the Deutsche Börse reflects a certain moneyed and self-regarding strain in global photography curating. But does it reflect contemporary photography in all its richness? And, more provocatively, should it? Perhaps it’s not just the Deutsche Börse photography prize that should be renamed and rebranded, but the Photographers’ Gallery itself.

Its a real shame since i go to a lot of photography exhibitions in London. The National Theatre, National Portrait Gallery, Museum of London, Natural history Museum and the Royal Festival Hall all have more interesting, varied and inclusive shows on than the Photographers Gallery!
The photographers gallery is more art related and less focused on photography.
Very bizarre.
Just at the point when the Thatcherites have reasserted their ascendancy, Sean O’Hagan starts sticking the boot into a publicly funded art gallery for being too conceptual. Shows a distinct lack of historical perspective (think of finalists and winners over the last few years like Paul Graham, Anna Fox, and a bit further back Joel Sternfield) and a odd sense of timing.
