The final week of Daily Dispatches: Nairobi
Written by Georgina.… a month long photojournalism project, run by photographer Brendan Bannon and journalist Mike Pflanz, reporting on the stories from the Kenyan capital, which all too often fail to get space in the foreign media.
“We are trying to go beyond the single story of Africa, by exploring in a nuanced way the lives that are lived in a fast growing fast changing African city. Much of the media focus on Africa is as a locus of war, famine and disease. While these are important stories they are not the only stories to be told. Complex, challenging, inventive and creative lives are being lived everywhere in Africa. You wouldn’t go to a banquet and only talk about the salt. Why should we only talk about the troubles? Brendan Bannon, Daily Dispatches.
Mike and Brendan are spending each day in April reporting from the city, blogging on the stories and sending the images and reports back to three US Universities who are creating an ever-growing exhibition throughout the month.
Mike Pflanz told CNN: “In 30 days we’ll never do more than scratch the surface, but I hope that when Nairobians read the blog, they’ll for once see an accurate depiction of their city reflected back at them. And we hope the students and those seeing the exhibition in the U.S. will simply learn more, understand more, and appreciate more the realities of the lives lived here.”
