Brand new, it’s retro.
Written by David WhiteNo, I’m not being Tricky, I am just going through my teaching plan for my workshop at University College Falmouth, and the piece below forms a small part of the lesson plan. It helps illustrate how photographers can retrofit their work into a photofilm.
The images in this first piece were shot for the Guardian magazine, where they ran. I was illustrating binge drinking culture in the U.K. They were shot over 6 Saturday nights. The audio was collected a few months later by MicrophoneMaster™ Benjamin Chesterton, and the piece built. Then it started to move. I imagine many of us have stories and bodies of work that we could revisit, to make them stronger, more interesting, allow them to cross mediums and gain greater audiences.
Please be aware that there is a bit of swearing in this piece:

Here are a couple of other photofilms which have been retrofitted, Innocence unusual in that it has no voices..again produced by Ben, verbatim around a blog post I wrote one night:

And this one, which was featured on the blog recently. Again, MM Ben™ in control of the audio and production. We just had a chat for 20 minutes, and then it all went bonkers with the piece and the story taking on a whole new life a couple of years after the original commission.
Going back to these works allowed massive audiences to be gained, paved the way for further commissions, helped sell many prints, and helped many, many more people understand the intrinsic stories better.
Gotta be worth a thought…
