Cartoon reporting?
Written by PeterListening to the terrible news unfold on Friday evening about the bombing and shootings in Norway, it was pretty clear that there was no reliable information about who was responsible or what their motivation for the crimes might have been. But that didn’t stop the radio news bulletins that I listened to (both BBC and commercial radio) in those first 4 hours after the attacks segueing neatly from description of the damage and the casualties straight into speculation that the attacks had something to do with the 2005 Norwegian press reprinting of the Danish cartoons depicting the Islamic prophet Mohammed or were the work of Yemeni-linked extremists in Norway. No other potential perpetrators were mentioned.
We now know that the attacks were carried out by a domestic Norwegian right-wing extremist with no known links to either Yemen or Islamic extremism. So what do we think about the early broadcast media suggestion that those who had committed the crimes were linked to Islamic terrorism – was this reasonable speculation to indulge in or just lazy prejudice?

Good post. I was thinking the same thing. So much of news has become correspondants speculating to fill hours of airtime. This kind of speculation is the worst.
Having lived in Norway this video made me rather mad but it’s fox news what can you say http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwdCxV10FwQ
