The image many aid agencies don’t want you to see
Written by duckrabbitbecause for some reason they think if you see some of the kids at Dadaab refugee camp, as humans, as kids having fun (just like your own kids), then you’re less likely to give.
Right?
What if one of the kids with the big smiling face gets down from the tree and takes you to meet his cousin, who is fighting for his life in an overflowing hospital in the camp where the staff just can’t cope? A kid who we can connect with takes us on a journey that might shake the way that we think and feel about the world. Because we’ve started to care about that person, it becomes important to us what happens to them.
If you want to get to my heart, please, please give me someone to connect with.
