All Dadaab needs now is a photographer like James Mollison

Here’s the blurb I’ve just found in my inbox (not linking to this crap) about James Mollison’s visit to the Dadaab refugee camp:

He set up simple backdrops that remove the subject from the chaos that surrounds them to create striking personal portraits that convey the emotion and life that make up the sprawl.

Two things James if you want to remove the ‘subject from the chaos’ you need more than a white backdrop.

And secondly they’re not subjects, they’re people.

Of all the photographs I’ve seen from the famine this one made my stomach churn the most.  Just goes to show photography still has the power to shock.
