How to do street photography
Written by David WhiteMatt Stuart is the most self effacing, funniest and skilled street photographer I have had the pleasure of listening to.
I suppose his approach resonates with me, which is why I like it. He’ll watch and wait for hours, look and observe constantly.
That’s how he manages to get the stuff he does. There really is no need to piss people off in the pursuit of a good street photo, imo.
This little film is fun, but Matt has left out so many killer pics it’s not funny. Hop on over to his site to get a better, er, picture.

Must have eyes in the back of his head, c/w a phenomenal sense of anticipation.
Very perceptive & inspirational.
Thank you! The difference between a guy whose main enjoyment was annoying people for mediocre results, and a guy poised enough to get results everyone can enjoy.
Here is a video that is an antidote to the video of that reprobate with a camera, Fabio, you posted about before. Even the soundtrack to this is so much more fun than his pretentious hip-hop badboy shtick. With many photographers, watching them take pictures is about as entertaining as watching paint dry, but with street photography it is fascinating to see the different styles. The photographer featured in this video, ERIC, was born in Hong Kong but has been living in Japan for some time. His book, Good Luck China, is worth checking out.
Matt is definitely up there as one of the best street photographers today. I will always believe that some of the photos he has taken are pure luck. But if you don’t shoot you don’t get lucky. My only gripe (for want of a better word) with this type of photography is that it’s almost like where’s wally – you look for the joke and then move on. I’d like to see images with a bit more depth. One’s that are worth looking at again and again.
