The stigma of software

Yesterday I got this email from someone in the USA about which editing software we use at duckrabbit:

‘What prompted you to settle on Vegas Pro? Given the stigma of it not being a so called “Professional NLE”, I’m curious as to your choice over Final Cut or PPro’

I have to say the stigma of working on a PC (sometimes) and using Sony Vegas Pro isn’t one of the things that keeps me awake at night.

Sad to think that people’s perceptions of you are so ruled by company marketing, even to the extent of what editing software you use. That’s why I’m not crying over Steve Jobs. He had the last laugh when his company killed Final Cut Pro.

I’d recommend anyone who wants to try really bootstrapping a project gives Kdenlive on Linux a go. Very clever bit of software, with lots of open source goodness if you like that kind of thing.

Wait you mean you don’t mainline Apple into your very blood? You use not only another NLE but use a non-Apple and non Avid software for video editing?!? *flicks hair and leaves blog in a huff*

    Ham at yerrrs. Harrrumph.

    ;-P

*Note to SteveInHeaven Jobs – I do use (and love/worship) Apple extensively, so please don’t make God really fuck it* (*multiple devices) up for me as revenge for writing that, thanks. I was only having a little joke oh wonderful St Jobs of Appleicious. *supplicates in genuflection* *genuflects in supplication* *utters seven hail Newtons* *presses the Reboot button hopefully*

I was shocked the first time somebody didn’t trust me at all for using Adobe software on a PC. Naturally, most of those people don’t have any idea about computers.

Apple products are way overprized and are trendy, enough for most people to have a blind faith in them. I’d never spend £800 on a smartphone as much as it tells me where the nearest pizza restaurant is… I’d rather ask somebody on the street.

Poopoohing others’ computer use is merely a currently salient example of humdrum, tool/toy/bauble-related, male insanity. If you were using a Minolta, Konica or other SLR, how could it not be a Canon or Nikon? If a Canon, how could it not be a Nikon? (or vice versa). How can you face the world without sporting a Swiss wristwatch whose face is big and bright enough to be read in a fantasized aeroplane cockpit or during a fantasized dive? Surely your city’s immaculately smooth road surfaces require that shopping trips are in nothing less than a Porsche Cayenne. Want to go out of town? Show your “rebellious” side by buying and riding a Harley (a two-wheeled Hoveround).

Don’t blow my cover! This has been the best excuse ever to leave all that video editing to Apple users!

As a friend who is a proper editor (I.E. doing full-on commercial stuff with million dollar hardware/software setups) once said to me: “There’s nothing pro about Apple Pro Res.”

Anyway, all together now: “It’s not what you use it’s the way that you use it…”
