iPhone pic to win WPP 2012?

I’ve just been having a quick read through of the World Press Photo review magazine (12/11) that fell on my mat. It’s a very interesting read, and a few comments by the new jury chair David Friend caught my eye:

“The question is, do we need to be strictly traditionalist, or do we want to move World Press Photo into the 21st century? I want to feel okay about pictures taken with smartphones. The filters used in such devices are approved under the rules of the contest as I understand them. I’m aware this is an unconventional stance”

“If you need a PhD to understand why a picture was selected, that’s not right.”

What qualities must a photographer have to survive in photojournalism today?

“The most important one is resourcefulness. You must adopt survival skills and be able to operate on the periphery of photojournalism.

It’s so hard to find direct support that it helps to develop entrepreneurial, aesthetic and journalistic skills to keep buoyed up”
