“My days are full of joy and sorrow.” – Sketches of Greenland.

Sketches of Greenland by Jeroen Toirkens and Petra Sjouwerman.   I met Jeroen at the Zilveren Camera photojournalism awards in The Hague last month – what a nice bloke.  He was picking up a well-deserved Canon Multimedia Prize for his Nomad’s Life project.

Jeroen started documenting the life of the last nomadic peoples in the Northern Hemisphere in 1999.  Since then he’s been to Russia, Alaska, Kazakhstan and Morocco, to name just a few places.  For me though, it’s his work in East Greenland that I found most striking.  The photography is fantastic and the films are beautifully put together.  If this doesn’t give you a serious case of wanderlust then nothing will.

  1. Thanks for the link to that Peter – what a wonderful set of stories. Who needs all that bl**dy ‘reality tv’ nonsense when there is a reality to other people’s lives that’s as interesting as that. Loved the b&w and shallow dof (although I know thats considered a bit of a cliche by many, I like it), and the whole production was spot on, right down to the edit.

Hi John. I agree – I think the B&W and the simplicity of the edit works really well. Great and sparing use of music. And the howling of the huskies in the background – really evocative.
