One of my favorite photos (proof of the power of talking and listening to bring people closer together)

David Constantine is one of the most able photographers I’ve ever had the pleasure of training.

A whizz with the camera and now pretty damn good with the audio recorder.

Shortly after he came on a duckrabbit training, he took himself off to Uganda where the charity he set up, Motivation, supports people with mobility disabilities.

One of the major ways they do this is by building and distributing some kick ass wheelchairs. They need to do that because some pretty big charities like to dump really crap wheelchairs in some of the poorest parts of the world, where they wreak pain and misery on the people forced to sit in them.

I love this photo so much because of something that David told me when he came back off the trip:

‘Benjamin the amazing thing about recording people is that it brought me closer to them in a completely new way’.

The act of listening and being listened to can be trans-formative.

Please don’t take my word on that.

A horrific road accident ten years ago left 16 year old Oscar an orphan and a double amputee. Today, Oscar is fit, healthy and active, working as a wheelchair technician in Gulu, Uganda. He’s supporting not just his younger brothers and sisters but other disabled people too. (c) David Constantine
