Sinking, swimming and telling stories

Being in Cambodia last year prompted me to re-read ‘Swimming to Cambodia’ by Spalding Grey. It’s a great book, a monologue that takes in the some of the modern history of Cambodia intertwined with Grey’s own experiences working as a supporting actor on Roland Joffe’s 1984 film ‘The Killing Fields’. ‘Swimming to Cambodia’ is personal, compelling and entertaining storytelling.

And though the film of one of Grey’s performances of his monologue unfortunately isn’t available to buy anymore, it is on youtube.  Sadly, Spalding Grey killed himself in 2004 after a long struggle with depression and the serious injuries that he sustained in a car crash.

Hope you enjoy watching a master storyteller at work as much as I did.
