Good news from the Guru
Written by Carl PendleIf you’ve heard about Jim Pickerell you will know that he sees into the future with all things to do with photography. He predicted the decline of rights managed stock photography and the increase in micro stock and now he predicts a demand for multimedia and video stories which is great news for all of us trying out this new form of storytelling. I’m surprised this is being put forward as something new; it has been on the cards for a very long time: the platypus workshops organised by Dirk Halstead in the US have anticipated this trend with their training for more years than I can remember and the arrival of the EOS 5D MkII and similar has simplt provided the catalyst for mass adoption.
The big question here remains: who pays?
Traditional ‘press’ organisations plead poverty or lack of consumer interest and most new media has no budget either. People will experiment and cross subsidise content for free for a time, but in the end there needs to be money to fund this work.
Hi Nick, Thanks for your reply to my blog post. I hear what your saying but there are people already paying for this type of work. I’m already making more money doing video and multimedia that I am from my photography.
Pickerell might well see into the future, but he sure looks to the past when it comes to stock photography. This is the agency he co-owns:

I guess it’s a matter of taste, but if I want a guru I’d prefer one who isn’t an advocate of 70s photo-kitsch.
