Is Getty wearing Leroy’s trousers?

UPDATE Jean Francois Leroy has emailed duckrabbit to say he will be responding within the next 48 hours.

Some of you will have been following the debate about why JF Leroy (Director of the Visa Pour L’Image Festival) has gone to such lengths to give the Haitian photographer Daniel Morel a kicking for uploading 15 of his pictures to Twitpic on the night of the Haitian earthquake.

After a rather lengthy response to our original post Mr Leroy has chosen not to answer the following questions (update Mr Leroy has emailed to say he will respond in 48 hrs)  that we put to him.

  1. Isn’t it true that Visa has a business relationship with Getty, one of the companies who distributed Morel’s photographs and then refused to compensate him?
  2. Do you yourself derive benefit from that relationship?
  3. Given that Getty are one of the key sponsors of Visa is it possible that some of the money Getty received from the sale of Morel’s photographs could benefit Visa?

Getty are much more forthcoming.   The following text (edited for brevity) is from a press release put out by them shortly before the 2010 festival.

‘“We are delighted that their (Getty photographers) projects are being highlighted at Visa Pour l’Image, which we are sponsoring for a third year, as we continue our support for the photojournalism community.” comments Adrian Murrell, senior vice president, global editorial, Getty Images.

Eugene Richards, Walter Astrada, Antonio Bolfo and Athit Perawongmetha, Paula Bronstein, Mario Tama, John Moore, Alvaro Ybarra Zavala, Tom Stoddart and Marco Di Lauro who are all photojournalists with Getty Images, have been chosen by the Visa Pour l’Image festival to showcase their work to festival attendees from August 28 to September 12, 2010.’

    Jean-Francois Leroy is a key supporter of photojournalism, and without the work he has put in over the past 22 years with his festival, photographers would be a lot worse off than currently, in what has become a difficult world for them, there’s no question about it. It seems like you’re trying to make much more drama than needed out of this story, as though you’re site is a tabloid gossip column trying to attract interest, without knowing the facts of who is ultimately to blame here.
