India’s unwanted daughters
Written by Ciara LeemingA few days ago, Duck flagged up MediaStorm’s new project, on India’s unwanted daughters.
One of the women interviewed in the piece was Dr Mitu Khurana, whose husband and in-laws tried to force her to abort her twin daughters, following an illegal gender test.
Several years on, and having left her husband (a very big taboo in conservative India) Mitu is facing new obstacles in the fight to gain permanent custody of her daughters.
The state is not on her side. She has filed a legal complaint but a high court judge even told her to reconcile with her husband and in-laws and to try to give them a boy.
Now, with the court case dragging on, her ex has applied for custody of the five-year-old twins, whom she is being forced to bring to court sessions once a month.
There is a petition protesting against Mitu’s treatment. If you watched Walter Astrada’s photofilm and were shocked by it, please take two minutes to sign it.
Thank you.
