Frankly Phenomenal.
Written by David WhiteI have just been looking at some truly great work on the 100 eyes blog…
The new issue of 100 eyes, entitled “China, the past is a foreign country”, is the best yet. By a country mile, in my opinion.
There is some amazing work in there…my favourite essay is Carolyn Drake’s “The Uighers”..outstanding imagery.
EDIT: I have just had another look, and to be honest, I cannot choose one essay over another. Each one just blows you away, and shows you something different in so many ways..
Well done to all the photographers, and to Andy Levin for curating….blinding job.

It is amazing, beautiful.Glad to have seen it.
At last, a work about China that is diverse!
Love the way a collection of short montages work in this context whereby superb images work in their own spaces but there is a humility about having the courage to work together for the sake of a narrative.
The beauty of this work is that although I normally hate some stories that look preconditioned to searching for the usual China = Industry = Bad = Dehumanising = Pollution images but it matters much much less if at all as they are shown in a relation to the other fragments of Chinese life.
I would normally ask myself if there is enough information for it to be journalistic and it could be more polished as an online presentation but who cares when the photography is this good – who needs to be tied to the big agencies and all the politics that probably comes with when this kind of curatorial thinking can make viewers ask questions instead of being pounded by the ego of a single “superstar” photojournalist.
Great stuff and congratulations!
