Photographer friendly art galleries?
Written by David WhiteDoes anybody know which art galleries in London are photographer friendly? There is a no photography policy at the National Gallery, even for tourists. I was surprised about that. I would really appreciate any tips to which galleries allow you to wander around with a camera (no flash needed) Thanks.
When I was in the Louvre a while back the French were much more laid back….any picture you want, even with flash….I reckon that on an average day the Mona Lisa gets lit by flash well over 50,000 times. I base this on the picture below, which I shot to prove my point…a half second exposure with two flashes going off. If that’s average then the figure for an 8 hour day is 115,200 times. I’d say 50,000 times is conservative.
I’m afraid to say I can’t believe that’s the original painting. I know it’s behind glass, but even so…

Working as I do in a Manchester Gallery tourists are always suprised that they are allowed to take photographs having also visited London. They do need a pass which is free and just a promise not to make money from the shots. As for flash we have a no flash policy one for the sake of the art and also because several hundred flashes going off all the time would be bleedin annoying and as the pictures are behind glass also pointless.
I am surprised to hear that the National Gallery don’t allow photography – I thought most galleries did. The Tate Modern certainly does.

The Saatchi Gallery in Sloane Square allows photography. Great gallery for contemporary art, and as the exhibitions are always changing, there is always something different to enjoy and photograph. One of my favourites.
