On Father’s Day stop and watch this

Not too long back I shared a stage with the poet, musician, writer, Musa Okwonga at an event at The Frontline Club. We were talking about the Kony film, which relates to an area of Uganda his family have escaped from.

Today I came across this live performance of his poem ‘Passport’ on a friend’s (thanks Pete Masters) Facebook page.

It’s an elegy to his late father and is as moving as anything you are likely to see today; if you have the patience to see the poem to the end. Keep watching, keep watching, keep watching.

It’s rare to see a performance turn so raw and yet so cathartic.

Proof that art, even at its most personal, can reach out far beyond the borders of its creators hopes and fears.

Today Musa’s Dad’s passport reduced me to tears. I wouldn’t bet it won’t do the same to you.
